If you’re looking for a way to up your Christmas decorating game, this DIY amber glass Christmas ornaments project is it. You’ll need some supplies from the craft store, but the results are so beautiful that they’ll look like decorations from a high-end shop. Plus, who doesn’t love making something with their own hands?
I stumbled across a pin on Pinterest that led me to the Craftberry Bush blog post. She provided a tutorial on creating these amazing DIY amber glass Christmas ornaments. The amber-colored glass ornaments are a perfect match for my Christmas decor mood board this year.
You will need Pebeo paints in brown, yellow, and red to create these amber glass ornaments. Since the brown paint is so dark, you will also need to mix in some Pebeo lightening medium to soften the color.
The mixture was 2:1:1 (brown, yellow, and red). I used the Paprika-colored red that came in the assorted box of paint. The other red didn’t give me the desired results.
Once I protected my countertops with thick paper, I mixed my paint in the 2-ounce shot glasses (and small jars I found at Hobby Lobby). After mixing the trio of paint, stir in a few drops of the lightening medium.
Now it’s time to pour the paint mixture into l the ornament. I purchase my glass ornaments from Amazon and Michaels.
Next, you shake the paint until the ornament is filled with paint. Once you’ve covered all sides of the ornament, place I over the small jar to capture the excess paint. You can reuse the paint for other ornaments. Keep in mind that the color will vary each time you mix additional paint. I can honestly say that it was trial and error on my part. Luckily, I only lost two ornaments in the initial experiment.
Allow the paint to dry either on its own or use a blow dryer. I allowed my ornaments to dry upside down in their container.
Finally, I used some brown acrylic paint to upcycle the silver tops on the clear glass ornaments.
One note: I would recommend drying them out with a blow dryer if you want to maintain more of the color. Mine got lighter because the paint continued to drain from the glass ornament.
