One of the hardest areas of my home to organize are bedroom closets! For this reason, I hired a professional closet company to install built-ins closet systems in every bedroom prior to our move-in. This was a lifesaver when unpacking my daughter’s clothing. For more information on custom closets, take a look at my blog post here on whether or not they add resell value to your home.
The closet was originally wire shelving that was installed by the builder. It lacked functionality and made it impossible to utilize the space adequately. With nine feet ceilings, I knew I had to maximize every bit of the vertical space within the closet. This is very helpful when you want to store items that you don’t reach for on a regular basis.
Take a look at the below pictures to see the genesis of my daughter’s closet:
BEFORE PICTURES:
I used all of the organizing bins and baskets from our previous home, so the closet didn’t function well for a growing little girl.
When I set out to re-organize this space, I knew I wanted to not only contain all of her clothing, doll clothing, Build-a-Bear clothing, and accessories but a lot of other items she wants accessible in her space.
I began by purging her closet of items that were ripped, torn, too small or just didn’t fit her well. This part took some time because I had my daughter try on a lot of the items in her closet. She was very helpful, and the purge was a success.
Luckily for me, her drawers were already organized by clothing type; albeit not in a neat and orderly way. The items were in the correct drawers; however, the organization within the drawer lacked an effective system that could be maintained by my little one.
My daughter would go into her drawers and wreck the entire system on a weekly basis. It was pretty exhausting to keep up with her “bull in a china shop approach” to getting dressed every morning.
In order to keep my sanity and maintain some semblance of order within her closet, I decided to find solutions that would grow with her and allow her to have the independence needed to get dressed.
I knew that Target and IKEA were my go-to places for organizing solutions. I had already organized my kids’ linen closet using all Target products. You can see that transformation here.
The plastic bins were the perfect height and width for her space, so I chose two different colors that would match the overall aesthetic of her bedroom.
AFTER PHOTOS AND TRANSFORMATION:
It took me a couple of weeks to get everything fully organized, but I’m happy with the results.
The large bins contain a lot of season clothing, doll clothing, stuffed Beanie Boos and a sleeping bag. The small bins are empty for now; however, they give her room to grow with the closet. I intend to place some memorabilia and keepsakes in some of these bins.
Now, let’s dive right into these eight drawers. The size and depth of these drawers are perfect for the IKEA SKUBB AND RASSLA boxes. The SKUBB comes in a set of six boxes of varying sizes. The RASSLA comes in a two-pack. I couldn’t have dreamed of a better solution for containing all of her clothing.
I attempted the Marie Kondo method for folding the clothing items that could be folded multiple times. This method creates so much space within the drawers and looks amazing! This was my first attempt, and I know my folding skills will get better over time!
All of the drawers are 16″ wide by 12″ deep. There’s ample space within these drawers; therefore a dresser is not necessary for her bedroom.
Left drawer #1 and #2: Undershirts, skirts, biker shorts, and underwear
Left drawer #3 and #4: Pajamas and leggings
Right drawer #1 and #2: Swimsuits, footed tights, and socks
Right drawer #3 and #4: Shorts, jeans and jeggings
My daughter has four hanging areas in her closet. I attempted to organize them by type and then by color from light to dark. This is extremely difficult for little girl’s clothing since it’s so colorful, bright and patterned.
On the top hanging sections, I tend to keep out of season pieces here. The bottom sections are the current season’s clothing. I switch them out based on the season to make the items accessible for my daughter. Some of the seasonal items are folded and placed into the bins. These are items that I plan to consign or donate at a later time.
I hope you’re inspired by my daughter’s closet. I am working with her to keep the closet organized. I will label the bins to assist her with placing items back after use.
Please let me know your thoughts on this simple transformation of my daughter’s bedroom closet!
