Reasons We’re Obsessed!
The modern farmhouse style is increasingly becoming a popular interior design style for existing homes and new builds. It has an absolute authenticity to it that interior designers and home décor enthusiasts find desirable.
This style gives an antique feeling of warmth, filled with comfortable furniture and modern décor pieces. It includes something vintage, classy, and possibly even retro. The furniture is casual and non-pretentious with clean lines. Some may confuse it with the country style probably due to its nostalgic yet practical look. But the modern farmhouse style is more refined blended with a touch of sophistication. But that’s not the only reason I love this style, read further to know more.
Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, it’s really how it works.

Blends Perfectly With Other Styles
Whether it’s French country, coastal, traditional, contemporary, Bohemian, or any other style, the modern farmhouse style can work cohesively with them all.
When you move into a new home, you potentially leave behind some older well-loved pieces as you set your sights on new ones. Modern farmhouse styling allows you to blend your existing furniture as well as other home décor pieces to create a curated look and feel. It provides for a rustic look with a modern touch when combined with different trends.
A simple example is an upholstered piece with clean lines paired with casual leather seating such as accent chairs, ottomans, and floor pillows. Or with a modern vintage rug, you can add traditional furniture with lighter wood tones, industrial accents, and greenery for that modern farmhouse look.
A chic example would be a very neutral palette mixed with more modern black and white accents. A neutral palette mixed with black and white is by far my favorite way to blend modern farmhouse with another style.
Can Be Incorporated In Any Space
Interior design can be tricky when it comes to modern farmhouse design. Some design styles prefer that you have a specific trend followed throughout your home. With a Bohemian style and decor, patterns are the order of the day. As for a modern farmhouse style though, you can use it for any room in the house or maybe just an open concept kitchen and family room.
A set of natural or stained wood barn doors could easily be installed for separation between spaces if necessary.
From shiplap or board and batten walls throughout the home to the lighting in the bathrooms, you can pretty much add a touch of the modern farmhouse style to any room.
Easily Created
The modern farmhouse interior design is practical and transforming from any other style is quite simple. The addition of light wood, textured pillows, or rustic tables could quickly turn a more traditional space into a modern farmhouse style.
A simple, grey color on your island or lower cabinets can provide a modern touch to a somewhat classic farmhouse feel. Great DIYs such as floating shelves, wall art, or a homespun blanket ladder is the order of the day with this simple, yet approachable style.
Connects To The Past
There is a certain feeling of satisfaction when you know you can connect to the past. A vintage, heirloom or antique find lends character to a newly built home that is leaning towards a modern farmhouse décor style.
Modern farmhouse styling has no relation to actual farmhouses; however, the use of replicas as décor from traditional farmhouses is an ode to the simplicity of the past. An example of connecting the past to a new modern farmhouse design is an antique drainboard sink repurposed from an old farmhouse. In my opinion, this is the perfect addition to a powder room paired with a bold paint color or wallpaper print.
Strongly Influenced By Nature
The modern farmhouse style draws a lot of influence from wood, mixed metals, and florals. A typical modern farmhouse kitchen filled with beautiful flowers that color the room. I can’t think of anything more beautiful that hand-picked flowers beautifully styled in a stark white pitcher or a clear vase.
While wood is commonly used in the dining room, you can also add some reclaimed wood beams and accents to give the home a rustic look and feel. If it’s a metal accent, you can use bronze, copper, or other pieces with a modern flair for a modern farmhouse style.
In conclusion, the modern farmhouse style is a sophisticated design that has a feeling of authenticity and function at the same time. With a touch of minimalism, it’s the perfect addition to your neutral palette. No other style makes me feel excited to be home every day like this one. I should challenge you to try it out and see.
