My family room is still a work in progress! Other than the kitchen, it’s one of the most used spaces in our home. For this reason, I wanted a very casual, inviting space for us to watch television, play board games, and entertain our guests.

Again, I enlisted the assistance of an e-Designer from Home Polish to provide me a couple of designs to choose from.
This space, along with the kitchen, is a huge open area, so the palette and décor had to blend seamlessly. The use of various wood tones layered with iron and mixed metals was a way for me to tie everything together without it coming off as too matchy. I’ve made that mistake in the past, and I just didn’t love the perfect ensemble look.
The sofas are the York sofa from Pottery Barn. These are not the original sofas I purchased from two years ago; however, I discuss this more in my tale of two sofas review. These sofas are deep with a sloped arm and come with three lumbar pillows for each sofa. I have removed them now to layer in lots of pillows and to achieve the black and white (with a touch of grey) theme that I love so much.
I love decorating with pillows, and black and white are my favorite palette at the moment. The textures in the pillows really provide the additional layers needed to complete the room.
Because I have kids, I knew I had to use a performance fabric that could stand up to constant use and abuse. My sofas are upholstered in the Pottery Barn Sunbrella Boss Weave fabric, and it is very kid-friendly and forgiving.
I initially purchased two Restoration Hardware Savoy sofas (pictured below) for this space; however, they were just not the right fit due to the low profile. These would be considered occasional sofas and not an excellent fit for a heavily used family room. I will incorporate them into my basement recreation room décor once I complete that project.
I knew I wanted the baluster coffee table look, so this Pottery Barn Lorraine coffee table was a no brainer. I purchased the largest size in the antique hewn oak finish, and it’s a nice contrast to the lighter tones of the media console and the sofa table. It has extra storage on the bottom to display books, baskets, bowls, or other décor pieces. I love stacking coffee table books and other large décor pieces on top of the table for visual effect.
The coffee table also makes a great space for Friday night board games!
The glass top accent tables are also from Pottery Barn, and they are the Tanner Round End Tables.
As you can see, I really love using baskets, bins, trays and bowls to add design interest to the room. I typically like a high-low feel with my decor accents, so Pottery Barn, Ballard Designs and Homegoods are my go to places to get home decor items.

The storage in this unit is unbelievable! Because I love to organize my spaces, this is the perfect piece to create organization for excess pillows, board games and other home decor pieces.
The infamous sofa (console) table from World Market makes an appearance in my family room. You have probably seen this all over the blogosphere as it’s a staple in many homes that feature a modern farmhouse style. This console table (or sofa table) is just the right length and height for my sofa, and the color I chose is the perfect hue.
As you can see, I love the pop of green in my decor. I use a lot of faux stems in my decor, and I love the freshness it brings to the room. One day, I will add real plants to my space!

A couple of things you’re probably wondering about this space by now are: where are the fireplace and the accent chair. Well, I opted to not go with a fireplace since it would take up precious wall space in the family room. I always knew I would build an outdoor living space as an extension of my home, so the fireplace or fire pit would be perfect for that space. I had the builder provide a rough-in for the natural gas line that would be needed for such a feature.
The accent chair is on order from Pottery Barn, and I can’t wait to add it to the space to complete the design.

Faux or real, plants are a great way to add a bit of life (no pun intended) to my modern farmhouse family room. I’ve mixed and matched different vases and added in faux stems, plants, and succulents throughout the space.
I love the artwork I scored at HomeGoods. I have plans to do a floating frame for this very large canvas.
My most recent find was a few pieces from the latest Pottery Barn sale. The wooden bowl with the copper accent along with the beautiful black bowl complete the look of this space and provides the excellent canvas for fall and holiday bowl filler.
I have a couple of more changes I want to make to my space, so stay tuned for those impending changes.
