My kitchen and family room is a very open concept space that offers an abundance of natural light. The openness is excellent when you want to work with minimal light; however, it provides plenty of shadows when you’re attempting to photograph this space.

in the kitchen.” ~Julia Child
CABINETS
At the center of my kitchen is this nine feet long island (9×5 feet). I opted for a contrasting color to my wall and upper cabinets. The builder used Timberlake cabinets in painted linen (white) for the perimeter of the kitchen and painted stone (grey) for the island. This is the first time I’ve had white cabinets, so I wasn’t initially sold on just an all-white kitchen. With six-year-old twins sitting at the island for almost every meal, it was essential for me to hide food and juice spills. Also, the painted linen grey color on the island adds the perfect amount of contrast and is on-trend with today’s modern farmhouse kitchens.
LIGHTING
The pendants were a perfect lighting choice for this space. They are the Katie Conical Pendants from Visual Comfort, and I opted for the hand-rubbed antique brass with the clear glass. They can be found online here. A less expensive option can be found here, here and here.
COUNTERTOPS
The countertops are Luna Pearl granite, and it was the only granite option that could pull this look together. As you know from the 7 Big Mistakes to Avoid When Building Your New Home post, I do regret not selecting a quartz option during the new build process. It was a lesson learned; however, I am in the process of choosing quartz for my kitchen update.
BACKSPLASH
The new addition to the kitchen is this beautiful tile. It a 3×6 glass tile installed in a typical classic subway pattern, and I decided to have it go to the top of the upper cabinets. This particular tile was an incidental selection that I embraced once it was on the wall. When I purchased a sample of the tile to view it in my kitchen, the salesperson at the Tile Shop gave me a Beach Glass sample instead of Platinum. Even though I took home the wrong sample, I still selected that particular tile from the many samples I had amassed. Once they began installing the tile, I noticed that it wasn’t as grey as the sample.
So, there are a couple of lessons here: 1) installed tile on a wall looks different than holding it against the wall, and 2) the tile changes with varying sources of lighting. The Beach Glass tile is more of a light taupe grey and not stark grey like the Platinum tile. Although it wasn’t my first choice per se, the warmth that it adds to my kitchen cannot be overstated. It also accelerated the decision to replace my existing granite with quartz.
The floors are the same throughout the entire first floor of the house. The Armstrong Rural Living Misty Grey engineered hardwood floors are the perfect addition to all of the warm wood tones throughout the home. They are easy to maintain and maintains their gorgeous appearance due to the hand-scraped, distressed look and feel of the wood.
I’ve included a full source list for my kitchen below if you would like to locate some of the items. I move things around pretty often; however, I attempted to capture everything below.
